My goal is to give my viewers the experience that I have when I am in one of the many beautiful places that we have here on Earth. Another goal is to make a beautiful object to help uplift the spirit of the viewer in some way. I don’t really have too much attachment to recording some sort of “objective” reality, but rather to interpret my own experience in the world, and make a statement that others might enjoy. I photograph using traditional film cameras, some of them antiques; and also digital cameras and scanners. I like the variety of experience in making black and white silver contact prints from an old 8X10 inch camera as well as making computer-manipulated images from scanned 35 millimeter film and from digital cameras. I also take advantage of the flexibility and control of computer systems for printing. I use Adobe Photoshop software running on Macintosh computers. I print on Epson printers using archival paper and inks. The quality and variety of these materials are growing daily, although some have also been trusted favorites of artists for generations. |

Biography
I was born in Gallup, New Mexico, where my parents and grandparents ran trading posts on the Navajo and Zuni Indian reservations. I started taking photographs of my sister and her dolls, self-portraits, pictures of pets, and desert scenes with my Brownie camera at age seven.
I studied photography at the San Francisco Art Institute and at the University of New Mexico. I have degrees in archeology and education, and have worked innumerable jobs. I have traveled and photographed throughout the Western U.S., and in Mexico, South America and Europe. I have shown in Jemez Springs, Taos, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Seattle, Oakland and San Francisco. I currently live with my wife Donna Lea in Jemez Springs, New Mexico, where I photograph people, scenery, and archeological sites for commercial use, publications, and greeting cards. |
